IG Followers – Blind Test
Hello Everyone! In today’s blog, I want to encourage you to try a fun and quick social media test, one that works best on Instagram. Let’s take a moment to be less biased by numbers.
.
Let’s do it together!
.
First of all, it’s best to play this game with a friend or a few friends—perhaps over coffee or during a lunch break. Prepare 10-15 screenshots of various Instagram accounts. Try not to use well-known profiles, as that won’t serve the purpose. Pick a few tattoo artists (since this blog is about tattoos, but it could work for anything—like bookstores or cafes). Choose accounts at random, with anywhere from 500 followers to 100,000. Then, edit the screenshots to hide all the numbers, leaving only the profile pictures and posts visible.
Show these profiles to your friend and ask them how they like each one. Ask them to score them from 1 to 10, and take note of their scores. At the end, check if the profiles that received the highest scores were also the ones with the most followers. It might be fun and eye-opening! How did your game turn out?
.
What can this game achieve?
.
It can help improve independent and critical thinking, while also making you aware of the “numbers bias.” Plus, it’s a fun way to spend time with friends and do something creative. Having a lot of followers doesn’t always mean the profile represents something valuable. Things that would have been considered unattractive 15 years ago, and wouldn’t even have been posted, can now get thousands of likes. Algorithms often favor extremes, and what attracts attention isn’t always the best. But sometimes, it is. The world is nuanced.
Measuring brands, products, or services based only on numbers can be misleading. In the past, it was simpler. For example, to create a tattoo design, an artist needed drawing skills. Now, anyone can generate or steal designs from the internet. Does this go hand-in-hand with quality? Fortunately, not every profile has lost touch with what truly matters—like the art and the tattoos in the case of tattoo artists. However, many profiles focus more on gaining numbers than improving their real-life skills.
Sadly, focusing on statistics can be addictive. But to be a good artist, doctor, musician, or lawyer, one needs to work hard—not just post more frequently.
.
Thank you for your time,
.
