Increasing popularity of Tattoos
Have You also noticed that tattoos became socially, totally accepted?
Nowadays, it is no wonder that someone has a tattoo. More often it is a question about what You have there, with a vibe of simple curiosity, rather than stigmatizing people with tattoos, or putting them into stereotype-kind-of-perception.
It is a good thing. Tattoos are a beautiful form of art in principle. Very often full of meaning and even helping people. Art is here to help us. Music, paintings, movies, literature, tattoos. Art is not only for pleasure and fun, which is an important aspect too., but is to make us feel something, experience and be human.
Why should someone be ostracized only because of a tattoo?
Unless, the whole face, palms and head is free of ink, for most people it is just normal. Some famous musicians are breaking that barrier too. If having a tattoo on face is a good thing for most people, is questionable, but if an artist wants to tell something through that, then that is good. Whether an artist wants to really tell something, or only makes a shock-type of marketing, we can’t tell for sure. However, it makes tattoos very visible to the public. Post Malone for example. You know him for sure he has a lot of ink! Or Ariana Grande also has quite a lot of tattoos, included on fingers and hands.
During our few years in Finland
we observed that tattoos there are perfectly accepted for years now. No matter what is Your profession, social status, background or hobby, no one was watching You in a judgmental way for having a tattoo. The same is in Sweden, USA. Maybe even more there. I think that it is wonderful. The freedom of self expression, without thinking what Your Mama, Dad, Grandpa, Friends, Boss, Colleagues will say. No need for hiding the tattoo, or making a secret out of it. Our clients were from all over the place. Literally, from students, teachers, doctors, managers of big companies, owners of even bigger companies, nurses, sales people, moms, dads, kindergarten teachers – everybody.
How does it look in the Netherlands?
I think it is on a good way to be just perfectly normal as well. Especially, that there are so many really beautiful styles of tattooing ( as You can see at Vadelma Tattoo ) available for people. Not only strong, bold lines, but also delicate, detailed designs. I don’t want to say that one is better from another, just saying that now people have a choice. Which is great! Even people who were not so much into the tattoo world, because they were biased by stereotypes, now can choose an artist who can make for example a delicate flower, or a sentence. In a very gentle and elegant way. This wasn’t possible even 10 years ago. Now You have a choice. Beauty of the free market!
Recently one of our clients told us
that she wanted to have a tattoo for many years, but wasn’t happy with the techniques and style that were out there 10-15 years ago, so she didn’t make any, until the industry transformed itself. Now, she is on her way to an almost-sleeved piece, with flowers, plants, birds and cute, tiny animals. One of the greatest compliments we received from our client was the fact that her dad ( who was not happy about the tattoo idea in general ), happened to really like her first tattoo made in our studio. She contacted us to get a small motive from Natalie. She also told us that her family is not super tattoo friendly, so she was a bit afraid of the reaction, especially of her father’s reaction. When we met her 2 months after the session, she told us that everything was just fine. Total acceptance from the family members. Beautiful story, showing that by making beautiful art, we can connect generations. When something is good, timeless, people tend to notice that and like it.
Tattoo studios are also more friendly-looking.
Clean, transparent, safe spaces are nowadays a standard. They are welcoming to visit them. An old stereotype of a tattoo studio only for sailors is long gone. Of course You can still find such studios, but mostly they are stylized to be raw. Like barber shops. Disposable everything, and tons of desifaction liquid for every surface is a must have now. Tattooing has a high level of protocol hygienic discipline, which obviously encourages more people to get one. Everything is made in the safest and cleanest way possible, like at the doctor’s!
