Iris thinks about New Design
Hello Everyone! In today’s blog, we will continue the story of Flora and Iris. Two besties, two independent girls, but what they have in common is the love for tattoos. Their approach towards tattoos is different, which makes it interesting to see. Flora is an early adopter seeking something fresh, while Iris always thinks more about their friends circle’s opinion rather than herself. This time they are considering getting their new tattoo. What will it be? What are their ideas? Where are they searching for inspiration? Sit down for 5 minutes, and you’ll find out. Maybe you’ll discover something for yourself too?
Flora’s beloved Cafe on the Bilderdijkstraat in Amsterdam.
December came. The weather started to get moody. It’s raining, then it’s windy, usually pretty cold, however not as bad as last year. Days are shorter and everything, from people to pets, seems to need more coffee. Flora is no different; she just orders her cup of black coffee. The barista was shocked. A young girl from Amsterdam ordering a simple black coffee? No latte art, no soya milk, no brown sugar, no lactose intolerance? She’s the true hipster of tomorrow! The fact was that Flora liked the taste of good black coffee. She likes to make it simple. She still reads books, listens to vinyl records, and walks a lot.
Not because it is fancy,
but because that is the way she used to do it forever. Flora was born in the early ’90s in a home that values face-to-face human connection, simple, yet good things, and time spent doing something together. When smartphones and social media came, Flora was already a teenager. She tried it, even though she still has Instagram and Pinterest, she uses them like a tool. Check and find what is needed and then turn it off. For a while, she had a short time when she went all in on it, and then she lost contact with real friends in the real world. It was not good.
That’s why she is meeting with Iris today. Like they used to when they were 16!
“Hi Iris! Good to see you! How are you?” said Flora, greeting and hugging Iris a little too hard.
“I’m great! I see you’re doing well too! I can feel your excitement in that hug, haha,” Iris replied as she sat down, ordered her coffee—a latte art (only a heart, because, you know, anything else would be just too much), oat milk, and a tiny bit of maple syrup.
Then Iris started to talk about her new tattoo idea.
“Well, Flora – I still don’t know. I cannot decide. I was scrolling all week, and now I am overwhelmed with the amount of tattoos, designs, and artists. And you know what? Even when I started to like something, it almost always turned out to be not here, or it was a guest spot who will or will not come to the Netherlands. You never know. It seems like people from all over the world are sponsoring their posts here. But when you look closer, super frequently it turns out that it’s either not from here, or it’s hard to get an appointment.”
“I know, Iris. It’s called the anxiety of choices. You think that the options are unlimited, and then it’s hard to decide. Even when you decide, the amount of options it was necessary to decline makes the emotional outcome of the actual purchase less fun. Our brain could not tell very well whether the declined option was good or bad for us. Our brain feels like we lost something, and it makes us less happy. The internet makes the impression that the whole world is tiny, but in reality, we are still living in the Netherlands, and still most likely we’ll go to the local artist.
Because, how many people will go to Vancouver to get a tattoo? And will it be really that much better? I personally am very glad that we have great artists here. I don’t have many tattoos, but it makes sense for me to go local. Especially since it’s easy to be blind to the things that are close to us.”
“You’re right Flora! I don’t like when you’re always right, but you are again this time! I remember when we were younger and I went to one shop for shoes. I was always happy with them. Now, I think that’s because I was not scrolling for 2 weeks, wasting tons of time to choose the perfect color, brand, and so on. I just went to a store, chose one of the available pair that suited me well, and felt comfortable. I wish to go back to those times!”
“You know, Iris, you always have a choice. The fact that you can scroll for 2 weeks doesn’t mean that you have to. You still can go to a store. There are many in Amsterdam to choose from. I can go with you if you like. It will be fun!” Flora is always happy to help and go for a walk.
“We’ll do! And what about tattoos? Do you have a pro tip?” asked Iris.
“Yes! Of course. One that works for me. I chose to go to Natalie from Vadelma Tattoo and will probably stick to it. That way, I don’t have to observe a million accounts. I like her style, I like how she works, and she has a studio in Amsterdam. Anytime I can contact her, and I know she will help. For sure, when I decide to get a new tattoo, I will just email her. A bit old school way, but for me, it works great. If you have no idea for a tattoo, every month she releases 6 projects. They don’t look like typical flashes. That’s now her aesthetics. They are really beautiful. You know, like a drawing. I think she really draws. So, you can visit her website once a month, choose one for you, and book an appointment. That’s it. Of course, for custom projects, it’s better to write an email, but those monthly designs are amazing.”
“Oh, I didn’t know! I need to check it out. I wanted to get a new tattoo as my Christmas present. Maybe I will book my first appointment with her. You told me so many good things that I have to try!”
“Certainly, I really recommend it! Let’s check it now, I also haven’t seen the new collection.”
And so they started to discuss more about the tattoos, the eventual appointment, and the possibility of ordering new coffee. Finally, Iris reserved design number 3 for her. Do you want to see which one it is? Click the link below. Maybe there will still be one available for you?
Thank you for your time,
Simon
