Sad story, bad choices, easy to avoid.
Hello everyone!
Recently, I was a witness of a very sad event. Related to tattoos, that’s why I decided to tell You more about it. Mostly to warn about bad tattoo choices and the importance to always go to a decent tattoo artist. Not looking good, but actually being good and highly skilled. Curios? Let’s go!
I took a walk in the beautiful city of Amsterdam with my wife Natalie.
Just to walk, talk, and move a little. Without any particular purpose. At some point, we passed by a tattoo studio ( no names however, it is not relevant to the story ) and saw a young girl, around 20-ish years old, leaving that studio.
She was literally shaking, not crying tough, but almost. Her face was in shock and disbelief. She wasn’t talking, just walked in silence. Her, probably boyfriend was holding her, tried to cherish and the only sentences we heard from him was :
“You don’t like it?”
That sentence floated in the air for a while and she said nothing in response, just kept walking. I don’t know what happened next, we haven’t stopped and talked with them. I can only imagine the huge disappointment. A disappointment that could be easily avoided if tattooers have a moral spine and customers were more assertive.
The fact that the girl had such a bad experience, doesn’t necessarily mean that the tattooer was unskilled. Maybe, just the design wasn’t his/her specialization and the inquiry from that girl was accepted only to earn some extra money, without thinking about the consequences and happiness of that girl.
This story is both for customers and tattooers.
The end goal should be to make good art. If a tattooer doesn’t feel like making a particle project. What’s the problem with not agreeing? At our studio – Vadelma Tattoo – we are simply not accepting designs that are not from our specialization. In the short run, maybe we didn’t earn a few euros, but in the long term we are sure that all our clients were satisfied with the tattoos they made at Vadelma. It is beneficial for both sides. Customers know, that what we are doing is always at our best and we became tattoo artists for them.
If You would ask Metallica to play funk, they would not agree, I am pretty sure about it. They will tell You : “Hey, we are playing metal. If You wanna listen to funk, then go to a Funkadelic concert. ‘’. Easy as that, no one is pretending, and everybody is happy. Among tattooers it is unfortunately not always standart, but we are getting better as a whole industry so I am optimistic about the future.
From the customer’s side, please always check the artist. Check the portfolio. If the content is good and the style matches Your vision, then go for it. Always look for art, overall beauty and quality. Please keep in mind that the most important things in an artist’s portfolio are stuff related to the profession. Too many private pictures, sweet, wonderful Instagram’s life are just noise. Maybe it looks good at first, but the tattoos are what You are looking for while searching a studio. Keep that in mind.
Otherwise, even if You are already on the appointment and You feel that something is wrong. Go home. Think about it once again. You will survive, even if You lose Your deposit. Your body and well being is more important.
I hope that this story will help You. You don’t need to share the experience of that poor girl. Let’s make use of this blog! Tattoos are a beautiful form of art, just make the right choices for You!
Take care,
Simon
