Tattoo Healing Process Explained | Tattoo Aftercare Guide by Vadelma Tattoo
Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Heal Your Tattoo Properly
Welcome! My name is Simon Vadelma, and I’m a tattoo artist at Vadelma Tattoo. In this guide, I’ll share essential tattoo aftercare tips to help your tattoo heal properly and stay beautiful for many years. Taking care of a fresh tattoo is actually very simple, but it is also extremely important. With the right aftercare routine, you can support your body’s healing process and protect the clarity and longevity of your tattoo. At our studio, we always remind our clients that the healing process is just as important as the tattoo session itself.

Being a Tattoo Artist
Being a tattoo artist is special in many ways.
Not only because you never create the exact same tattoo twice — every tattoo is unique — but also because the tattoo becomes a permanent part of someone’s life story.
A tattoo can be like a favorite song that accompanies someone through many moments in life.
For us, tattooing is also about connection. Every tattoo session is a collaboration between the artist and the person receiving the tattoo.
Because our canvas is human skin, both preparation and aftercare are extremely important.
Today we’ll focus on what to do — and what to avoid — during the healing period, which usually lasts around 3–4 weeks.

When Does Tattoo Healing Start?
Your tattoo healing process begins once you remove the protective second skin foil, typically 2–3 days after the appointment.
Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands thoroughly.
If you have pets, especially dogs, try not to let them lick the tattoo — bacteria can easily infect a fresh wound.
How to remove the protective foil
Remove the foil under lukewarm water, slowly and gently.
Avoid pulling it quickly like a waxing strip.
After removing it:
-
Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water.
-
Use mild soap if recommended.
-
Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel.
-
Let the tattoo breathe for a moment.
-
Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream.
Avoid using Vaseline.
Repeat this process every 4–6 hours, depending on how dry the tattoo feels.
You don’t need to wake up during the night — just try to keep a consistent routine during the day.
Understanding the Tattoo Healing Process
A new tattoo is essentially a controlled skin wound.
Tattoo needles deposit pigment into the dermis, which triggers the body’s natural healing response.
During healing:
-
Blood flow increases
-
Immune cells move to repair tissue
-
New skin layers begin forming
Your immune system also tries to remove the tattoo ink. However, the pigment particles are too large to fully break down, so they remain trapped in the dermis.
Special immune cells hold the pigment in place — which is why tattoos can last for decades.
While the surface may appear healed after a few weeks, the deeper layers of skin are still rebuilding.
During this time:
-
Collagen restructures
-
Skin regenerates
-
Ink stabilizes in the tissue
This is why the first month after getting tattooed is crucial.
Your job is simply to support the body’s natural healing process.
Tattoo Aftercare Tips
Avoid friction
If your tattoo is on your arm or another area that touches surfaces frequently, try to minimize rubbing.
Even light, repeated friction can affect how the ink settles.
Avoid water exposure
For the first 3–4 weeks, avoid:
-
Swimming pools
-
Saunas
-
Steam baths
-
Long baths
Short showers are fine.
Avoid sun exposure
Fresh tattoos are extremely sensitive to sunlight.
Keep your tattoo covered or in the shade until it is fully healed.
After healing, using high SPF sunscreen will help maintain the clarity of your tattoo.
Do not scratch or peel the tattoo
During healing, your tattoo may:
-
flake
-
itch
-
form light scabs
This is completely normal.
Avoid scratching or peeling the skin — this can remove pigment.
Avoid heavy sweating
For the first 2–3 weeks, avoid intense sports or heavy sweating.
Sweat and friction can slow healing.
Avoid shaving the tattoo
Wait 2–3 weeks before shaving the tattooed area.
Limit alcohol
It is best to avoid alcohol for 2–3 days after the tattoo session.
Alcohol can stress the immune system and slow healing.
Additional Healing Tips
Small lifestyle choices can support better healing.
Sleep well
Your body repairs tissue most effectively during deep sleep.
Wear breathable clothing
Soft cotton fabrics reduce irritation and friction.
Stay hydrated
Healthy skin requires proper hydration.
Eat nutritious food
Your body needs nutrients to rebuild tissue.
If small areas fade slightly during healing — which can occasionally happen — a touch-up can always be done once the skin is stable.
Tattoo Healing: The Bottom Line
A tattoo is more than ink on skin — it’s a piece of art that stays with you for life.
By following proper aftercare and giving your body the time it needs to heal, you can help your tattoo settle beautifully and maintain its clarity for many years.
