What does “Vadelma” mean?
Hello Everyone! Today, I will tell you a story behind the name that connects all of our artwork—from services and tattoos to art prints. Let’s go!
“Vadelma” is a Finnish Word!
Do you know what it means? I am pretty sure that all of our friends from Finland know, but outside of that cultural circle, you probably have no idea!
“Vadelma” means “raspberry.”
In my opinion, it is one of the cutest, loveliest, and most fun words in the whole Finnish language! It is connected to nature, love, and peace—like all fruits, basically. To name our tattoo studio Vadelma Tattoo was an unexpected choice, but we wanted a name that is associated with something pleasant and nice. A welcoming name that carries good values with it.
Why Raspberries?
Who doesn’t love raspberries? They are tasty, feel like summer, and they are dense in vitamins—like our service is dense in art and kindness! So the word “Vadelma” fits all the requirements. Even though Vadelma was established in Helsinki/Turku, it still works very well abroad too. It sounds great in all languages, and for Finnish people, it is the insight from the type of “For those who know :)” giving it more layers and meaning.
Interesting Linguistic Fact
Did you know that the letter “D” is the rarest letter in the Finnish language? There are only a few words that have it, and even fewer that have it inside, like vaDelma. Here are the rest:
- Rudolf (name) – Like the famous reindeer
- Kandidaatti (candidate)
- Sydän (heart)
- Sade (rain)
- Löydä (find)
I wasn’t aware of it while we chose that name with Natalie, but one of our customers told us this. Since I love languages, I was blown away. Yes, I know that such a thing doesn’t blow away anybody, but what to do 🙂
Now, you know the story behind our artistic name. At this point, you certainly figured out that Vadelma is also not our real last name. Vadelma is the alter ego that goes beyond language; it is the beginning of a brand. A brand we are building. It is a process, but at least you know our core values a little more by now.
Thank You for Your Time!
