Why Is Vadelma Tattoo Called Vadelma? | Meaning Behind the Name
The Meaning Behind the Name Vadelma Tattoo
Hello everyone!
Today, I want to tell you the story behind the name that connects all of our artwork — from tattoos and services to art prints.
Let’s go.
“Vadelma” Is a Finnish Word
Do you know what it means?
If you’re from Finland, you probably already know. But outside of that cultural circle, most people have no idea.
“Vadelma” means “raspberry.”
In my opinion, it’s one of the cutest, loveliest, and most playful words in the Finnish language. It’s deeply connected to nature, love, and peace — just like fruit in general.
Naming our tattoo studio Vadelma Tattoo was an unexpected choice. But we wanted a name that felt pleasant, welcoming, and warm. A name that carries good values without trying too hard.
Why Raspberries?
Honestly — who doesn’t love raspberries?
They taste like summer, they’re full of vitamins, and they feel light yet rich at the same time. In a way, that’s exactly how we see our work: dense with art, care, and kindness, but never heavy or aggressive.
Even though Vadelma as a concept started in Helsinki / Turku, the name works beautifully abroad as well. It sounds good in many languages, and for Finnish people, it carries an extra layer — a quiet “for those who know” kind of meaning.
That subtle depth felt right for us.
A Small Linguistic Detail We Love
Here’s an interesting linguistic fact we learned later.
The letter “D” is one of the rarest letters in the Finnish language. Only a few words contain it — and even fewer have it in the middle, like vaDelma.
Some examples:
-
Rudolf
-
kandidaatti
-
sydän
-
sade
-
löydä
I wasn’t aware of this detail when Natalie and I chose the name, but one of our clients told us later. As someone who loves languages, I was completely fascinated. Small details like this make the name feel even more special.
More Than a Name — A Brand and Alter Ego
By now, you’ve probably figured out that Vadelma is not our real last name.
Vadelma is an alter ego — something that goes beyond language. It’s the beginning of a brand, but more importantly, a set of values we’re slowly building and refining.
It’s a process. But by reading this, you already know a little more about what matters to us.
If you’re curious how these values translate into space and experience, you may enjoy reading about our private tattoo studio in Amsterdam.
And if our visual world resonates with you beyond tattoos, you can explore connected artwork in the Vadelma Art Print Store.
